Au J1708/J1587 Simulator (Value Package editions) are now released for selected customers. Full family (8 different editions) of J1708/J1587 simulators will be available later (around 2nd half of 2010).

The Au J1708/J1587 Simulator value package editions are designed to simulate the following Message ID and PIDs (parameter identification) on a J1708/J1587 network:

•   Message ID: 128 (Engine #1)
•   PID list:
o   Request Parameter
o   Percent Engine Load
o   Engine Oil Pressure
o   Engine Coolant Temperature
o   Fuel Rate (Instantaneous)
o   Engine Speed
o   Engine Hour *
* On Request per SAE J1587 definition

The simulator can run by itself.  So it requires no software set up or decent knowledge of J1708/J1587 protocols. It can generate static data in the static mode or constant-changing data in the dynamic mode. A Remote Terminal GUI (available only for the Value Package Plus edition) is an option for product development and product validation applications.

I'm trying to determine the difference between the following products:

SIMJ1708-001 (Non Plus)
SIMJ1708-005 (Plus)

From what I gather the Plus version has a PC interface and GUI that allows some control of the device. Is it possible to add additional PID's? Or is the PID list set for both devices.

Yes. Both "value package (VP)" editions are identical on J1708/J1587 PID lists. Both are standalone devices, which can operate without a PC.

The VP-Plus version includes a PC GUI which allows a user control the device from a PC; it also display simulated data on a PC screen.

The "VP-non-Plus" edition is designed for assembly line or incoming inspection application, which only need a signal source to drive the instruments/bus and doesn't need to read the value of the J1708/J1587 signal.

For new product development and product tests/validation, it is highly recommended using the VP-Plus edition.

> Is it possible to add additional PID's?

No, user cannot add new PIDs for the moment. However new PIDs will be added to higher editions of our future release (engine basic/engine premium/vehicle platinum editions). And both VP editions can be upgraded to any of the future editions to get more PIDs by on-site firmware and license upgrades.

>Or is the PID list set for both devices.

Yes, same PID list is set for both devices. They are identical except "the Plus edition" includes an optional remote terminal feature and software.

PID list:
   Request Parameter
   Percent Engine Load
   Engine Oil Pressure
   Engine Coolant Temperature
   Fuel Rate (Instantaneous)
   Engine Speed
   Engine Hour

For the moment, both Value package editions are the early release of Au J1708 simulator family (8 different editions are scheduled to be released near June-2010.)

More PID will be supported in future release of engine basic/engine premium/vehicle platinum editions.

You are welcome to send us a PID wish list.

SIMJ1708-002: Au SAE J1708 / J1587 Simulator Engine Basic (Non-plus) Edition

SIMJ1708-006: Au SAE J1708 / J1587 Simulator Engine Basic Plus Edition

The Au J1708 simulator Engine Basic editions generate 18 most frequently used engine parameters in SAE J1708 / J1587 format. PC remote terminal software is included for the Plus edition.

Optional PC remote terminal software:

Typical J1708 network topology:

Au SAE J1708 / J1587 Simulator engine basic editions are capable of simulating 18 most frequently used J1708 / J1587 engine parameters.

As the non-pus editions, the plus editions can still work independently (without a PC). The optional remote terminal software can be used to control and display simulated J1708/J1587 data.

Au J1708 Simulator Engine Basic Plus Ed. = Engine Basic non-plus Ed. + Remote Terminal on PC

These device are very easy to use. No decent knowledge or experience of J1708/J1587 is required to operate them. Simply connect the devices to a J1708 network, power up, you are good to go.

Au SAE J1708 / J1587 Simulator Engine Basic Editions are designed to simulate all 6 parameters supported by value package edition plus 12 more Basic Engine parameters on a J1708 / J1587 network (18 parameters altogether):
Message ID: 128 (Engine #1)
Supported PID list:
1. Request Parameter (PID: 0)
2. Second Fuel Level (Right Side) (PID: 38 )
3. Parking Brake Switch Status (PID: 70)
4. Road Speed (MPH) (PID: 84)
5. Power Takeoff Status (PID: 89)
6. Percent Accelerator Pedal Position (PID: 91)
7. Percent Engine Load (PID: 92)
8. Fuel Level (PID: 96)
9. Engine Oil Pressure (PID: 100)
10. Boost Pressure (PID: 102)
